Driving innovation in the volunteer sector
PieceOfKind – Is an award winning innovative new system using simple SMS and cutting-edge technology to dynamically link a support request to a volunteer, onboard and manage volunteers, and provide vital validation of all volunteer support services.
The context
In March 2020, during the first lockdown, we set about looking at how we could use our proven results driven creative skills, alongside the fast and efficient low-code technologies, for community good. During early research, conversations went from local to national within days and we soon realised the scale of the challenge. There are over 166,000 voluntary organisations nationally who, by and large, manage this process manually, with over 3000 volunteer organisations in Bedfordshire alone. Furthermore, less than 5% of volunteer organisations receiving funding.

In summary
PieceofKind is a great example of how the right insight and proven creative problem-solving skills can be accelerated using the latest low-code cloud-based technologies to address a significant sector challenge, at pace.
PieceofKind simplifies the UK’s volunteer management processes, making it simple for anyone in need, wherever they are, to get the help they need. It also makes it much more efficient for authorities and volunteer organisations to onboard, process and manage volunteers: all by simple SMS.
Alongside Volunteering Matters, Letchworth Heritage Foundation, North Herts District Council and North Herts CVS many other stakeholders played a part in the research and development and we are now in discussions for a number of pilots. In addition to a government InnovateUK award, PieceOfKind has now won Netcall’s App of the Year Award 2020 for Innovation.
